New York’s Callosum explores the origins of emotion and drama in club music and infuses his new EP on the 48k label
Leipzig-based North American producer Callosum returns to New York’s 48k label with his first solo release in two years.
After a period of drumless experimentation, the artist noticed by the legendary band Classical Trax returns to club music for his new EP entitled Tell You. Inspired by the new nightlife context he discovered in the German city where he lives during his post-doctorate, this EP also allows to find the emotive and dramatic touch typical of the productions of the New Yorker.
Composed of three tracks, the sound universe of this release was built during Callosum’s residency, Ecstatic Origins, on Callshop Radio‘s Leipzig station. “While preparing for each show, I spent a lot of time digging into music from the mid to late ’90s: ambient trance, IDM, and jungle-infused pop. These long listening sessions directly inspired the sound palette of this EP,” explains the producer in the press release of Tell You. For his radio show, he set out to explore the origins of emotion and drama in contemporary club music.
Ahead of the release, 48k gave us a sneak peek of the final track, “Awake”, produced in collaboration with Mancunian newcomer Porter Brook. The track shows a fine balance between incisive drums and Callosum’s signature unstoppable melodies. After a rather contemplative first half with reconstructed dancehall accents, the schism occurs at 2mn15 for a jungle-reinforced second run with punctual amen breaks.
Pre-order Tell You by Callosum on Bandcamp, official release on April 28th via 48k.
