PREMIERE : RAVL – Doomsday Clockmakers (Bad Tips)

Our favorite Marseille’s hybrid bass wonder boy RAVL is back with an impressive single of meticulously designed electro cuts, to be released in early 2024 on the club exploratory Lyon-based imprint Bad Tips

After three years of being a room for many emerging electronic talents with its SoundCloud curation page, which is still one of the most dynamic and revered hosts for so many groundbreaking club music of our time, Bad Tips launched its label section in late June 2023, a new chapter still mainly operated by DJ and label manager gboi. The first release was a twelve-tracker compilation which highlighted some of the most adventurous club laboratory technicians, unleashing pieces from the likes of Shonen Bat, Neida, Swooh, Hajj or Tatyana Jane, the latter now being blessed with an upcoming pack of remixes of her « Antagonist » electro banger which will be out in a few days. With the same wide-range spirit and no-restriction mantra that defines his premiere channel, gboi seems to be an appetite for all kinds of danceable / deejay sounds, whether they were rushy ghetto tech anthems, Latinxcore gems or IDM poems, among other curiosities.

Hailing from Marseille and also raised in Lyon, texture sorcerer and hybrid bass couturier RAVL (whom we already talked about on the occasion of a remix by yours truly on Belgrade’s own Nü Kulture) will inaugurate the first solo artist appearance on Bad Tips, introducing his Archives EP. Two bangers showing the French producer’s ability to join razor-sharp drum arrangements with an otherworldly qualitative sound design, throughout with attention on melancholic melody crafting that reminds (to me at least) the works of another genre-close artist who goes by the Aloka moniker. This pair of originals will come with a bunch of crazily enthusiastic reshapes by none other than Hyas, Lisa More and Pura Pura, all three being known for their dexterity both as DJs and producers.

Until the full release lands on Bad Tips in early January, you can now dive into one of the EP’s main tracks entitled « Doomsday Clockmakers », which you can listen to above the present article. Over the run of four stretched minutes, RAVL realizes a true exploit by casting an unforgettable sonic spell with his heady, cinematic synths chanting a pretty dark lament, decorated by surreptitious voices and a real wolf pack of fanged percussions, getting to our ears and devouring it as they were simple birds of prey. Not to forget some brain-twisting machinery of analogue stabs in all the stereo spectrum that sometimes unhide themselves as sadistic fairies remembering us they were always around, ready to trick us up. Properly mental. Doom is near, cover your ear.

Bad Tips will release RAVL next output Archives EP on January 10th 2024 on all platforms, but you can already pre-order it here.
