Based in Quito, Ene Ese first caught the attention of Cuntry Club label founder Under Arrest with his track “Fosas”, featured on the inaugural compilation Matena Stelo. He strikes back in the CClub with The Age of Aquarius a new mystical and personal EP
Composer and DJ Ene Ese is part of this new generation of hyper-productive artists from Ecuador, alongside Entrañas, Zunfo, and Joaquín Cornejo. Taking over the SoundCloud sphere and international radio airwaves such as NTS, Rinse, and BBC Radio, having shared the stage with renowned DJs like Nick León, DJ Python, and Siete Catorce.
In his latest EP, The Age of Aquarius, mastered by Berlin-based Argentine producer Tufi, Ene Ese designs the order of his tracks as a true mystical journey. The beginning of The Age of Aquarius is often placed in the late 1960s until the late 2000’s, inevitably evoking “Woodstock and the age of aquarius”, in 1969, where an entire crowd celebrated free love, escaped a daily life marked by capitalism, and rejected all forms of discrimination while fighting for peace. Festival-goers, immersed in mud, were swept away by legendary performances from artists like Ravi Shankar. The Aquarius is the sign of rebellion, freedom, protest, and transgression – always ahead of its time, visionary by nature. It is also central to New Age philosophy.
Ene Ese was also inspired in the writing of this EP by his time spent at sea, recently working on a cruise ship where he composed his tracks during his free hours. This aquatic contemplation is palpable, distorted in the reflections of the waves within a deep and mental atmosphere, structured by Latin percussive samples. The EP even includes a collaboration with 2_ambivalent, artist he met on the ship.
Ene Ese’s style skillfully merges contemporary tropical bass influences with rhythms rooted in his native culture. This project stands out for its high-energy dancefloor vibe, shaped by his experiences in North and South America. The EP’s signature also lies in its palpable influence from the UK dub scene, bringing a dynamic that fits seamlessly into any bass music DJ set. While paying homage to a rich cultural heritage, the EP promises to captivate dancefloors open to global bass music.
This EP includes a remix by his longtime collaborator, Entrañas, whose tracks have been played by artists such as CRRDR, the Tratratrax DJs, Toccororo, and Manuka Honey, known for his devastating club energy.
DNZA, the sound engineer beloved by Cuntry Club, also contributes with a peak-time energy remix, following his collaboration with Undrwrght on the label’s first standout compilation with the track “Aguijón”, which was played by Surusinghe during her unforgettable Boiler Room set in Melbourne. DNZA is one of those Mexican producers who can effortlessly churn out banging remixes at an impressive pace.
To close the EP, Under Arrest, the label’s founder, invites Berlin-based Colombian producer SEPBTT, who delivers a remix infused with his signature tribal trance style – an essential DJ tool that deserves a spot on any USB stick.
