The PSSNGR label presents a rough amapiano rework of a DJ Mujava classic by the always inventive duo Toxicated Keys
With two albums already released by PSSNGR, the prolific Toxicated Keys are back on the Parisian label with a new single featuring Lady Gupta and Kgadiiey. Entitled “Mugwanthi”, this track is actually a reinterpretation of DJ Mujava’s eponymous track (the author of the legendary “Township Funk”) released in 2005 and combining old school house and quantum sound. The Pitori duo wanted to add their own touch and reappropriate this classic, so they kept the lyrics, added vocals from Lady Gupta of Mamelodi West and Kgadiiey, and redesigned the production with the inimitable codes of the amapiano. Check out the track exclusively in this article before its release on all platforms tomorrow.
Mokwele and Thaban Makhafola (18 and 20), who make up Toxicated Keys, are among the spearheads of rough amapiano, or rough musiq, the rawer, peppier offshoot of the South African genre that resonates around the world.
Alongside GemValleyMusiQ, they make up the roster of artists put forward by PSSNGR, the excellent label of the inescapable Jess (Jess & Crabbe, Bazzerk, 10lec6…), focus on the musical genre of the Pretoria townships. Release after release, PSSNGR draws up an impeccable panorama of rough amapiano, between unstoppable singles, albums that prove that the genre holds up better than ever on a long format, TikTok with 1M views, and other quasi-documentary clips of the movement.
