In 2012, xiangyu met Yasutomoto Funakanga -her current manager- while she was studying at the Bunka Fashion College. For some reason, he advised her to start singing, but she declined, as she was not interested in music at all. Five years later, she decided to follow Yasu and they started the xiangyu project by dropping the amazing and funny video of “Poo Pad Pong Curry”, a crazy fusion of gqom and J-pop. Since 2018, she sings about the simple things of her daily life such as food or shoes, empowered by producers like Kenmochi Hidefumi or Gimgigam. Seduced by this incredible shock between Japanese culture and global sounds like gqom, amapiano or singeli, Chiguiro Records contacted xiangyu and Yasu to collaborate on a Remix EP. The label gathered 4 of the best global electronic producers of our era, and proposed them a challenge: bring their fresh vision of the iconic single “Poo Pad Pong Curry”, six years after its release.
Here is the first remix, crafted by the genius DJ Raff. Based in London, the Chilean DJ & producer is known for his ability to combine ethereal atmospheres, South-American inspired beats and unique melodies. In the wake of his album Encontrar, the bootleg specialist brought xiangyu in his universe with an organic and groovy remix! More remixes to come with a dark gqom version by Emo Kid, a rhythmic interpretation from another world by Babani Soundsystem, and a fast and fun singeli remix by Tanzanian sensation Jay Mitta!
