The Australian DJ/producer Tinika explores the rhythms of Afro-diasporic club culture on her forthcoming EP for Funky Adjacent
Australian DJ and producer Tinika is back on the London label Funky Adjacent with her new EP, Verve. On it, the Melbourne/Naarm-based artist explores rhythms drawn from Afro-diasporic club culture. Recently nominated for Music Victoria’s Best DJ 2024, Tinika draws on her vast knowledge of clubs and festivals to compose three tracks that promise to be highly effective on dance floors.
Our pre-release snippet is the track “AKWA”, out now on CxC. Tinged with gqom energy, the track combines syncopated rhythmic sequences and punchy bass with dog barking samples, all set to an unstoppable Central African Afro groove. With its ‘square’ waves and claps reminiscent of Mumdance grime, “AKWA” is a dynamic track that definitely blurs genres.
Funky Adjacent is a label and events collective that focuses on cross-pollination between UK funk and percussive genres from around the world.
Pre-order Verve by Tinika on Bandcamp, out on 7 November via Funky Adjacent.
