CxC PREMIERE: Choupetik – La Mazucamba Darkeada (Misantropical)

Parisian Latinx queer nights Misantropical announce their label with a merengue-infused EP by Choupetik

Misantropical is a platform dedicated to Latin American electronic music that was launched in 2023 in Paris. For the project’s co-founders, Mexican Rara Ma Rabbia and Venezuelan Choupetik, its ambition is to decolonise the vision of popular music from their native region, while reclaiming their roots and culture. Already well-established on the club scene, with nights featuring line-ups that are always well thought-out, as well as relevant talks, Misantropical ended 2024 on a high note by announcing their residency on Rinse France. 2025 gets off to just as good a start, this time with the launch of their own label.

Their first release is an EP entitled Melancolatina Vol. 1, produced by Choupetik. On it, the melancolatina wanted to send a message to Latinxs who, like her, have left home for an indefinite period: a menear la colita merengosa! For this EP, the Venezuelan was guided by her passion for merengue, the soundtrack of her childhood and adult life, a music that is always by her side and whose frenzied rhythm is often the solution to everything.

Para mí, el merengue es la música más sabrosa, y
se me hace extraño como DJ pero ante todo como
persona, no escuchar tanto de esto en la disco.

As she explains, for her, merengue is the most sabrosa music, yet it’s rarely heard at parties. So Choupetik hopes to remedy that with her debut EP, which features 6 new tracks infused with the Dominican genre.

Ahead of the release of Melancolatina Vol. 1, the producer tells us about the track ‘La Mazucamba Darkeada’, now available in columns. Inspired by Oscar D’León’s ‘La Mazucamba’, a song she grew up with, this ‘darkeada’ (literally, ‘darkened’) version is enriched with contemporary club sounds of trance, gabber kicks and the unstoppable guaracha bass line… So many reasons to (re)propel merengue onto the dancefloor!

Don’t miss the release party for Melancolatina Vol. 1 at Le Floréal in Belleville on 19 March.
