De Schuurman

De Schuurman is a DJ and producer from The Hague in the Netherlands. He is a specialist in bubbling, a musical genre derived from dancehall, created in The Hague at the end of the 1980s.

Legend has it that it was a Curaçao-born DJ, DJ Mortje, who accidentally created the genre during a set at Club Voltage in The Hague by playing a 45-rpm dancehall record instead of a 33-rpm one. The crowd was electrified and the new genre, called ‘bubbling’ or ‘bubbling house’, soon became important in the African diaspora in the Netherlands.

As a producer and DJ, De Schuurman contributed a lot to the evolution of the genre in the late 2000s, following in the footsteps of his uncle DJ Chippie, one of the co-founders of the genre. He also called himself God Full Effect in the late 2010s. His tracks mix bubbling rhythms and Caribbean samples with rap and R’n’B samples and trance synths and became a staple of the Dutch bubbling scene.

The rare gems highlighted on Bubbling Inside, his recent Nyege Nyege Tape released in 2021, mostly date from 2007 to 2009. Their current success on the global club scene is a testament to the producer’s forward thinking.

Since this release, he has been working on a series of collaborations: in production, as evidenced by his remix for Bitter Babe and Nick León on Florentino’s label, or in a DJ set, at the Boiler Room Festival in 2022 in Amsterdam in a b2b with the Gqom duo Surreal Sessions.

Ikonika

After a career spanning over ten years, four albums, dozens of EPs, and dates around the world, Ikonika is one of the most respected names in the UK bass diaspora. Known for her numerous releases and affiliations with Hyperdub, Night Slugs, Planet Mu and most recently Club Djembe, Ikonika is an artist always on the move, now light years removed from the post-dubstep landscape in which she first made her name.

While aspects of her sound remain consistent – a love of club-friendly beats built with a digital flair and a keen sense of melody – the diversity of her interests – pop, R&B, bashment – has become even more evident in her recent music. She has now opened up to singing on new tracks she has written, giving her productions a lighter pop feel. This includes the new EP Bubble Up (Hyperdub), infused with amapiano, and has led to a new live performance that combines singing, live edits of her songs, and DJing. This performance was premiered to an enthusiastic audience at Berlin’s Panorama Bar in September 2022.

Ikonika has just released the excellent dancehall hybrid EP Supernova in collaboration with MC 45Diboss on Night Slugs.
